Mapping the RCIA steps and periods

“The RCIA distinguishes four periods of inquiry and growth, which prepare for three major steps in the spiritual path of the catechumen (RCIA 6-7). While the liturgical year, culminating with the celebration of Easter, offers a beautiful pathway, Christian initiation can take place at any moment during the year if this is to the advantage of the spiritual journey of the candidates.

1. Precatechumenate. First, the free inquiry by the (potential) candidates in search for initial answers. They are called inquirers in this period, in which the preparation focuses on evangelization and the precatechumenate through the first announcing of the gospel, helping the candidates to discern and grow in their desire to become Christians. This period ends with the first formal step: the rite of acceptance into the order of catechumens. Candidates who are already baptised skip this period and step, but usually it is wise for them to follow the full catechetical program of the catechumens to prepare them for acceptance in full communion of the Church and receiving the other sacraments of initiation.

2. Catechumenate. Second, the inquiry continues during more intense and structured catechesis while the candidates start living a life of faith and get acquainted with the community. Traditionally, the candidates are called catechumens in this period, which can last anything from several months to several years. It ends with the second formal step: the rite of election or enrolment of names. Often this takes place on the first Sunday of Lent (in the cathedral with the bishop).

3. Purification and enlightenment. Third, a more intense spiritual presentation during the period of purification and enlightenment. This usually much shorter period ideally coincides with the Lenten preparation for the Easter celebration and the sacraments of initiation. The candidates are referred to as elect. This period is aided by the celebration of the scrutinies and presentations and concluded with the third formal step: receiving the sacraments of Christian initiation (traditionally during the Easter vigil): baptism, confirmation and the Eucharist.
4. Mystagogy. Finally, the experience of a sacramental life in the community.  It is a time for deepening the Christian experience and further spiritual growth with postbaptismal catechesis or mystagogy. The baptised are also called neophytes. Traditionally this period extends through the whole Easter season. A final gathering can be organised on the first anniversary of their baptism or acceptance in the Church.”

The DeoQuest RCIA course should be mapped with the liturgical calendar of the local community and the journey of the individual participants. But your local needs and the journey of the participants may be different, so feel free to adapt this.
